Welcome to Second Grade

We would like to welcome you and your child to second grade! We are going to have a fantastic year as we engage in and explore many new topics. Together, we are going to be investigating math and science concepts, and learning new ways to understand what we read! We believe the key to successful learning lies within a student’s natural curiosity about the world around them, and it is our goal to make their learning experiences as engaging as possible. With your assistance, your child will excel as he/she learns many exciting new things this academic school year.

Some helpful hints for a successful year:

  • Let your child be responsible for his or her behavior and schoolwork.
  • Be sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast.
  • Review graded papers that go home each week.
  • Let your child know that we communicate about his or her work and behavior (both good and/or bad)
  • Listen to your child. Let him or her talk about their day.  Remember, you are your child’s 1st teacher!

Our ELA B.E.S.T. standards are divided into four strands: Foundations, Reading, Communication, and Vocabulary. In the early grades, K-2, there is an emphasis on explicit, systematic phonics instruction, as decoding and fluency are essential to creating proficient readers. We also work on fluent communication such as writing complete sentences, compound sentences, paragraphs, journal assignments, and long responses that include grade-level expected language mechanics.

Our math focuses on deepening our understanding of how to apply varied mathematical strategies to problem solve when working with basic facts, place value, two- and three-digit addition and subtraction, geometry and patterns, measurement, money, time, fractions, and data.

In social studies, we will be learning about America’s past, geography, economics, civics, and government. Our science curriculum will cover Earth’s structures, weather, matter, forces and motion, energy, human body, life cycles, and habitats.
